What is Deadstock?

The term, "Deadstock" refers to the materials, textiles and leathers no longer useful to factories and companies in the garment industry. Often due to overstock, slight damages, mismatched custom orders, lack of storage space, or being out of season, brands commonly need to "let go" of their materials.

That's where we come in. Instead of ordering new textiles, Mary+Shelley utilizes deadstock in our design and production. These textiles are sourced from warehouses in New York City and abroad, where we meticulously select each hide or roll of material to ensure quality. This approach allows each collection to be unique, based on the available materials.

We believe sustainability shouldn't come at a premium. Our commitment to reviving discarded materials allows us to provide quality at more accessible prices. Each item, though it may have a unique look or slight imperfection, is crafted to meet our rigorous standard and offers exceptional value to our customers.

At Mary+Shelley, our passion for revival drives every piece we create. We are committed to sustainability and individuality and hand-pick our materials. This practice not only reduces waste but also ensures each piece is a one-of-a-kind, reflecting the creativity and uniqueness of the person who chooses it.

Our Leather Philosophy

Since leather is a byproduct of the meat and dairy industry, utilizing it helps reduce that excess waste, making it a responsible choice. Leather, when properly cared for, can also outlast synthetic alternatives. A report by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) indicates that high-quality leather products can last for decades. This longevity reduces the frequency of replacements, leading to a lower overall environmental impact compared to vegan or faux leather, which often wears out more quickly and may not be as durable. At Mary+Shelley, we take it a step further by using waste created by luxury and higher-end brands when making our leather goods.
